General Information

Dear Room Parents,

Thank you for agreeing to help with one of the most exciting areas of the St. George's Auction, the Classroom Art Projects.  Each year, these projects are very popular and make a significant contribution to our fundraiser.  If for some reason you are unable to be in charge of your project, please recruit a fellow parent in your grade to fulfill this responsibility.

In an effort to make this easier on you and the teachers, we are providing specific guidelines and instructions for each grade using some successful projects from previous years and some that are borrowed from other schools.  Please feel free to improve on the project that your grade has been given, adjust the theme to your liking or add to it if you see fit.

Instructions:

1. Find your grade's project below.  They are listed chronologically beginning with the White Dragons' One Year Old Class.

2. After reading the instructions, contact your classroom teachers to see if they will be able to provide classroom time for the students to participate.  If they are unable to do so, you will have to find a time and place after school to work with the children.

3. Collect your supplies.  Try to have as much of these supplies donated or recruit parents from your grade to help cover these costs as their donation to the Soiree.  This can be a tax deduction if they fill out a donor form.

4.  Complete your project.


5.  Fill out the Soiree Donor Form describing your project as it will appear in the Soiree Catalogue.  These forms will be available as a download on the St. George's Website and also in the offices at school.  

6.  Photograph your completed project and provide a digital copy that will be posted on the Soiree website.


7. Deliver your completed project to school ready for display.


Time line:
(Light up the Knight will be April 9th, 2010)
By Monday, November 1st- 
1. Contact your classroom teachers and plan a work time with the children.
2. Turn in your Soiree Donor Form describing your project for the catalogue.


By Tuesday, March 1st - 
1. Collect your supplies.
2. Meet with your students and create your project.


By Monday, March 14th - 
1. Send a digital photograph to Martin Avegno.  His email address is martin@stgeorgesepiscopal.com.
2. Deliver your completed project to school for display.

White Dragons - (1 yr. olds) Personalized bowl or platter using thumb prints- Posh Pottery

List of Supplies:

1. bowl or platter from Posh Pottery

2. paint to be used for thumb prints

Instructions:

1. Pick out your pottery of choice from Posh Pottery.

2. Choose a theme such as the crayfish above for your overall design.

3. Have the children place their thumb prints on the object.

4. Have an artist enhance the thumb prints

5. Take the pottery to Posh to be fired and glazed.

Blue Dragons (2 yr olds) Faces of the Future

Instructions:

1.  Arrange for someone to take a close up portrait style photograph of each child in the 2 year old class.

2.  Print a 5 X 7  black and white photograph of each child.

3.  Take it to a frame shop to have it matted and framed.  It could be entitled "Faces of the Future - Class of 2022" 

Red Dragons (younger 3 yr. olds) - Young Hands

Instructions:

1.  Arrange for someone to take close up pictures of each child's hand.  Half of them should be their left hand and the remainder should be of their right hand.

2.  Print each hand either in Black and White or in Sepia.

3.  Take the prints to a frame shop to be matted and framed.  This could be entitled "Young Hands."

Red Dragons - (older 3 yr olds) Option 1 - Shelf or buggy of books

Supplies:

1.  Wooden crate, buggy, or similar prop.

2.  Books donated by each child in the Red Dragon class.

3.  Photos taken throughout the year.

4.  Acrylic paint- high gloss

5.  Mod Podge.

Instructions:

1.  Have the teachers take pictures at special events at school.

2.  Locate a wooden prop as seen in the picture above.

3.  Have each child donate a book of choice for this project.

4.  Paint the prop 

5.  Decoupage the photographs to the prop using Mod Podge. 

6.  Interview each child asking them "Why do you like reading?" or "What does reading mean to you?"

7.  Type their answers with your computer and apply their responses next to their photo.

8. Fill the prop with the books.

Red Dragons - (older 3 yr olds) Option 2 -Teamwork

Instructions:

1.  Arrange for someone to take a class photograph of the Red Dragon Class.

2.  Have the children hold hands and take tiny steps forward.

3.  Consider the location in front of St. Georges with the school in the background.

4.  Print a 16 X 20 color photograph of the class.

5.  Take to a frame shop to be cropped, matted, and framed.  It could be entitled "Teamwork" or "Hand to Hand"

K-4 - Personalized Cookbook with Children's recipes and photos

Supplies:

1.  Kitchen basket

2.  Cooking spoons, measuring cups, kitchen towels, and local cooking staples such as beignet mix or Tobasco Hot Sauce

3.  Photograph of each child in a chef's hat

3.  Dragon's Delight Cookbook 

Instructions:

1.  Interview each child and ask them their favorite recipe.

2.  Have each child describe in detail how to prepare their favorite food.

3.  Take a photograph of each child with a chef's hat on.

4.  Create a cookbook on Shutterfly or a similar service. 

5. Each child's recipe should be featured on one page of the cookbook.

6.  The page should have the child's photo, the name of the recipe and the child's instructions on how to create their recipe.

7.  Consider including a "real" recipe at the bottom of the page so that this would be an authentic cookbook.

K-5 -Kindergarten does Kandinsky

Supplies:

1.  4 X 4 inch square of white paper  for each child

2.  one pencil per child

2.  4 Crayola Magic Markers per child

3.  A short biography of French Expressionist, Wassily Kandinsky

4.  3-4 copies of Kandisky's paintings (available at the same website)

Instructions:

1.  Spend 10 minutes teaching the children who Wassily Kandinsky was and what his paintings were famous for.

2.  Give each child a square of paper with 4 different colored markers.  Follow the color scheme in the above photograph, choosing each child's markers carefully.

3.  Instruct the children to use their pencil to draw a small circle in the center of their square.

4.  Next, they should add the three larger circles.

5.  Using the magic markers, they will fill in each circle with the appropriate color.

6.  Take the squares to a frame shop where they will mount, matt, and frame your collage.

7.  It could be entitled "Kindergarten Does Kandinsky."

1st Grade - Handmade Quilt

2nd Grade- Self Portraits

Supplies:

1.  2 X 2 inch square of white paper

2.  Crayola Magic Markers

3.  Poster sized foam board

Instructions:

1.  Have each child draw a self portrait of themselves using their magic markers.

2.  Each square should be outlined and signed as seen in the photo above.

3.  Have a teacher or artist draw the heading at the top of the foam board  "St. George's Episcopal School- Class of 2017" along with the school crest in each corner.

4. Take the board and self portraits to a frame shop for them to be mounted, matted, and framed 

3rd Grade-Houses of New Orleans

Supplies:

1.  4 X 4 inch square of white paper

2.  Crayola Magic Markers

3.  copies of the different types of houses in New Orleans (link provided below) 

Instructions:

1.  Go to this website and copy images of the architectural styles of homes in New Orleans

2.  Lead a discussion about how each style is unique and have each child decide which is their favorite.

3.  Using their magic markers, have each child draw a house on their square.

4.  Take the finished squares to a frame shop and have them mounted, matted and frames.

5.  This could be entitled "The Houses of New Orleans"

4th Grade - 4th Grade Play Group Photo framed and signed by cast AND "Faith, Hope, Love"

Framed and Signed Photo of the Class Play

Supplies:

1. Pre-made black frame with wide mat- from Target

2.  Photo of the Class during the play

Instructions:

1.  Buy a cheap pre-made frame from Target

2.  Have each child sign the mat.

3.  Take a picture of the class during Play Rehearsal.

4.  Frame this yourself.

5th Grade - "The Eyes of Our Future" - 12" X 35" abstract portrait collage

Supplies:

1. Two 12 X 35 inch pre made black frames from Target or Michaels

2.  photo/paper cutter or scissors

3. Two pieces of red 12 X 35 inch mat board from an art supply store-They may have to  custom cut it to fit the 12 X 35 frame.

Instructions:

1.  Arrange to have a photo taken of each child.  Make sure each child is the same distance from the camera, or make sure that their head covers the frame with about 2 inch margins around.  Some children are smaller, so adjust accordingly.

2.  Print an 8 X 10 black and white photo of each child.  

3.  Divide the photo into two groups, using the left eye of the first group and the right eye of the remaining group.

4.  Line up the photos so that the eyes appear to go straight across.  When the left group and right group meet, a "whole face" will appear in the middle.  As you will see in the photo above, the eyes will not be exactly straight across, but they actually gently curve up and down since each face is different.  

5.  Using your photo cutter or scissors, cut a 1 1/2 inch strip of the eyes and evenly space each eye on top of the red mat board.  Attach each eye with spray-on adhesive.

6.  Place the collage into the frame.

7.  Due to the number of 5th graders, you will end up with TWO finished frames.

6th Grade - Geometric Abstract

Supplies:

1.  30 small styrophone coffee cups -cut the cup down to one inch deep

2. 50 styrophone plates

2. one box of long plain tooth picks

3. one package of plastic or glass beads

4.  five packages of soft, white puff play-do

5.  Acrylic paint- lite blue, dark blue, brick red, turquoise, yellow, gold 

6.  paint brushes for 25 children

7. glue

8. scissors

9.  white foam board- poster size

Instructions:

1. Divide the children into four groups.

2. Assign each group one of the following items to create: flowers, suns, roses, and pie patties.

The flowers will look like these below.

 

To make the flower:

1. Give each child a  styrophone cup and have them cut tiny strips to create the petals

2.  Have them paint them using the colors provided

The Suns will look like this:

 

To make the sun:

Do the same as the flower, only instruct the children to cut a triangular shape to form the rays.

The roses will look like this:

To make the rose:

1. Using the playdo, form a rose.

2.  get a tooth pick and glue beads to it

3.  Paint the rose

4. place the rose on the end of the toothpick

The Pie Pattie will look like this:

To make the Pie Pattie:

1.  Using the playdo, make a ball and squish it flat.

2.  Get toothpicks and stick them through the pattie.

3.  Paint the Pattie.

Once the students have created their item,

place the items on the foam board and arrange them according to the photo above.

Glue the items to the foam board.

Take the collage to a frame shop where it will be framed as a shadow box.  

Remember to have it wired for hanging purposes.

7th Grade - Copper Collage

Supplies:

1.  4 X 4 inch square of copper sheeting- one per student
2. 4 X 4 white square paper- one per student
3. popsicle sticks- one per student

4.  old newspapers
5.  pre-made poster size frame from Michael's
6. black matting board- poster size
7. Optional: card stock- to be used for matting each individual copper sheet (In the photos above, the top project does not have matting around each copper sheet and the example on the bottom has red and white matting.)

 Suggestions for Safety:

The students should be shown the proper ways to handle the copper 

pieces, as the edges are sharp.

Instructions:

1.   Show the students examples of the various copper tooling examples as in the pictures above.

2. Have the students draw a sketch on their piece of paper. (Any theme can be used.  A Fleur de lis theme was used in 2009.  In the pictures above, insects were used in the top example and hearts in the bottom. You may consider a local theme such as street cars or red beans and rice.  Each student could also do their own rendition of the front of the school .)

3.   Once the students are happy with their sketch,  instruct them  to tape the top and bottom of the sketch to their copper piece to prevent it moving as they were transferring the image. For this reason it is suggested that they leave a 1 inch margin along the top and bottom of their sketch.

4.   Next, they will need to place a thick pad of newspaper to begin their transfer on. If they don’t use the newspaper the lines won’t transfer. They should go over ever line of their sketch to transfer it to the copper plate. Trace over all lines with a ball point pen - remove drawing.

5.   After the sketch is transferred the students should use the Popsicle stick to begin pressing out areas of the copper (rounded modeling tools may also be used). This will give the project a 3-d effect. Turn back to front side and refine edges of design. A dull pencil works good for this if modeling tools are not available.

6. Optional:  Antique with liver of sulphur (if using copper tooling foil) - or antique with India ink (if using aluminum). Shoe polish may also be used.

7.  Take the finished copper sheets and matt them with the card stock

8.  Place them on the poster sized matting board

9. Glue them into rows with adhesive spray or craft glue

10.  place in the pre-made frame

Eight Grade- "8th Grade Photo Memory Book"

Supplies

1.  Digital Camera

2.  Access to Shutterfly or a similar service

Instructions:

1.  Arrange for someone to take a portrait of each 8th Grader.  You may consider the students taking pictures of one another.

2.  Have each student answer the question "What did St. Georges mean to you?" or perhaps they will tell you what their best memory is from their years at school.  You could have them tell you their favorite quote as well.

3.  Create a memory book on Shutterfly or a similar service.

4.  Each page should feature one student, their portrait, and their quote.

5.  Consider a unique name for the book such as "Dragon Tales" or "8th Grade Memories"

6.  If you are really inspired, you could make the cover look like the photo below:
